This collection of articles examines fundamental issues and proposes basic changes needed in teacher education. The articles are grouped into three sections: part 1, "The Context and Objectives of Teacher Education"; part 2, "Some Innovative Programs"; and part 3, "Future Directions." Part 1 includes articles which examine the philosophical premises and purposes underlying teacher education, assess the merits and defects of the concurrent and consecutive teacher education programs, and examine political and institutional factors which have led to recent changes in Ontario's teacher education system. Part 2 focuses on innovative programs in teacher education such as internship programs and alternative schools. Part 3 identifies areas in teacher education in which reform is needed and suggests ways it can be brought about. Articles in this section include a survey of the present situation in Ontario, an examination of how programs for teachers can be modified to improve teaching skills, and a consideration of how initial and continuing education can be wedded through curriculum study.
