Evaluation of a Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation Curriculum for Junior and Senior High School Students.

An adaptation of the standard American Heart Association training program was utilized to teach secondary school students cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) procedures. Students, at both junior and senior high levels, were randomly assigned to practice and no-practice groups, of ten students each. All were taught CPR procedures didactically, but only the practice group trained with an automated mannikin especially constructed to train for the ABS's (opening the Airway, rescue Breathing, and artificial Circulation) of CPR and to record performance by marking rate and force of compression and ventilation on a strip chart. Data from a practical and a multiple choice test were evaluated in terms of student ability to perform the required skills immediately after instruction and again three months later. Other variables included student age, IQ, sex, weight and teacher performance (the latter being evaluated by means of a behavior rating). Significant differences in performance at the .05 level or under between the two groups occurred in 18 out of 19 dependent variables in the initial test and 13 out of 17 variables in the retention test. Students at secondary school levels were able to perform the skills if given the opportunity to practice them. (Author/EB)
