Fall 1971 and Fall 1972 data analyzed in this report were provided by 4,637 graduate science departments replying to the Survey of Graduate Science Student Support. Section one covers trends in support of graduate students in science. General characteristics, characteristics of matched departments, sources of major support and type of institution are discussed. Section two, trends in postdoctoral appointments, reviews matched departments and type and control of institutions. Section three, Fall 1972 characteristics, discusses graduate enrollment and postdoctorals. Graduate enrollment is reviewed in relation to support of fulltime graduate students, medical schools, geographic distribution, and sex of graduate students. Appendices include technical notes; classification of institutions in survey of Graduate Science Support, 1972; statistical tables; and instructions and consolidated departmental data sheets. (MJM)
