The Social Studies Curriculum in Virginia's Public Schools.
Virginia State Dept. of Education, Richmond. Div. of Secondary Education.
A report on the social studies curriculum in Virginia is the result of a study of the social studies program, kindergarten through grade 12, undertaken over a four year period. Special focus was placed on the four following areas: proliferation of elective course offerings in social studies at the senior high level; course offerings at grades eight and nine; instruction concerning minority groups; and the instruction cycle in Virginian history, government, and geography. The initial objective was a re-evaluation of the scope and sequence of the social studies program. Concerns of particular interest to the study were subject matter content, grade placement of content, skill development, attitudes and concepts, citizenship education, multi-ethnic studies, environmental education, and training of teachers. Basic aims in social studies education, Virginian social studies education from 1870 to 1970, course offerings, social studies continuums, certification of teachers, instructional materials, curriculum guides and information materials, curriculum analysis, and professional services are all reported.
