Political Ideologies of Graduate Students: Crystallization, Consistency, and Contextual Effects.
Fay, Margaret A.; Weintraub, Jeff A.
The data on which these investigations are based were drawn from the Carnegie Commission's Survey of Faculty and Student Opinion of 1969. The commission received completed questionnaires from 32,963 graduate students, and the authors took a random sample of 2,125 of these. The aim of the research was to examine the ideologies of graduate students, and to discover the factors that seemed to affect the content and internal structure of these ideologies. The major theoretical interest of this analysis is the light it throws on two important phenomena: the structuring of an individual's ideology and the rational and contextual factors that help to shape it. Appendices include tables related to the texts and the survey questionnaire. (Author/PG)
