Your Choice at Eighteen Plus. A Guide to Decisions after A-Level.
March, Peter; Smith, Michael
A part of The Careers Research and Advisory Centre Choice Series, this book is written for eighteen year-old or eighteen-plus students in England, and who have completed thirteen years of full-time education and are involved in career planning for the future. Section I, Destinations, explores personal assessment of the individual and the world of work, careers after A-level (the national examination taken at age eighteen), and the employment opportunities in small-scale manufacturing. Section II, Routes, includes a broad perspective of higher education as well as specific discussions of the universities, the newly formed degree-level polytechnic institutions, the colleges of education for prospective teachers, and other higher education centers, such as colleges offering full-time and part-time programs. In Section III, Transition, which covers college and job interviews, the possibility of postponing university entry, and preparation for the student role, suggestions are given for coping with the transitional period. Approximately 50 pages are devoted to appendixes, bibliography, and informational sources. The appendixes include listings of general subject areas and what they include, combinations of A-level higher education possibilities, entrance requirements for major professional bodies in chart form, and a descriptive checklist of professional bodies.
