Teachers, counselors, administrators, and university personnel from five States participated in the conference whose purpose was to analyze their changing roles in emerging career education programs. Special emphasis was placed on Virginia's rapidly developing programs of career education. Norman Gysbers spoke on "Critical Issues in Career Education," reviewing key opinions concerning purposes and conceptualizations of career education. Byrl Shoemaker's paper, "Rationale for Career Education," focused on the skill, technological knowledge, educational background, work habits, and attitudes essential to the nation's growth rate, and described a career continuum differentiated by grade level used in Ohio. Deal L. Hummel spoke on "Work and the Changing Attitudes of Students and Parents." Career development, he syas, reinforces positive youth attitudes in helping develop personal identity and self respect. Group discussions were summarized by Tom Hohenshil. "Life Career Development: The Basis for Developmental Guidance," by Norman Gysbers, described the concept of integration of roles, settings, and events over a total life span used for improving and extending comprehensive, developmental guidance programs. The remainder of the proceedings consisted of reports on career education projects in Virginia. The conference program and participants are listed. (MS)
