Preparing the Consumer Educator. Consumer Education Materials Project.
Baecher, Charlotte; And Others
A wide range of preservice and in-service programs designed to prepare teachers in all disciplines for consumer education is described in this final publication of a series of six prepared by the Educational Services Division of Consumers Union for the Consumer Educational Materials Project (CEMP). The volume is grouped into three sections. The first section focuses on in-service teacher preparation programs taking place in Massachusetts, Illinois, Ohio, and New Jersey. Case studies in the second section examine educational techniques used to add a consumer dimension to professional preparation programs in engineering, law, journalism, and economics. Ways to use the different approaches are suggested in each case study. The final section consists of an in-depth case study on the technique of change, based on the reorganization of the College of Human Ecology at Cornell University. Also included is a special chapter which explores social, economic, and psychological factors influencing consumer behavior and suggests strategies for handling value conflicts. Related documents are SO 006 859-865. (Author/KSM)
