An Interdisciplinary Science Program for Elementary Education Majors.
Smith, Maura
This study describes the framework of a curriculum plan for the preservice education of elementary school teachers, utilizing a conceptual schemes-processes approach to instruction and based upon the philosophical set described in the 1970 AAAS publication, "The Preservice Science Education of Elementary School Teachers." Major goals of the curriculum aim to prepare teachers with: (1) positive attitudes toward science; (2) an appreciation for the historical, philosophical, and current significance of science to society; (3) an understanding of basic conceptual schemes and concepts; (4) competence in use of processes of inquiry; and (5) enthusiasm and confidence. The proposed curriculum plan is designed to be team taught by scientists and science educators. To achieve maximum flexibility and to provide for individualization, five distinct modules are presented: Conceptual Schemes and Concepts of Science, Processes of Science, History and Philosophy of Science, the Social Aspects of Science, and Field Experiences. The curriculum plan presupposes that the complete curriculum and behavioral objectives for each aspect of the program be fully developed by the team of instructors themselves. The study outlines a proposed plan of evaluation, both formative and summative. (Author/EB)
