A questionnaire was sent to each of California's 58 county offices of education as a means of obtaining information about the services offered by the professional education libraries to local educators. Of the 43 counties which replied, 36 offered some kind of services, but there was a great deal of variety in both their nature and extent. Most of these county professional libraries employed professional library personnel, but their duties and salaries differed widely. Total operating budgets ranged from $2400 to $321,000 depending upon the kinds of services offered and on whether the professional library was a distinct entity or was merged with another agency. Collections were generally found to be small, with curriculum guides the most common materials and non-print media conspicuous by their absence. Users and conditions of use were varied and, finally, increasing numbers of developing library networks were noted. San Mateo's Educational Resources Center (SMERC) was found to be particularly active and significant in this respect. (PB)
