The Middle School: Whence? What? Whither? Fastback Series, No. 22.
Middle schools may be described in terms of grades--grades five or six through eight--or in terms of program--one that assists boys and girls to move from elementary to secondary education with maximal success. The author discusses the historical roots of middle schools; examines the great variety of middle schools, discussing them in terms of grade structure, administration, and program; and compares their roles to those of traditional junior high schools. In the condluding section he suggests what might happen to middle schools in the future. (JF)
