The purpose of this essay is to present an analysis of the functions of education from a broad social, economic, and political perspective, and to derive from this analysis suggestions for a political strategy which teachers may pursue in efforts to promote an egalitarian, democratic social order. Provided in the analysis are summaries of conclusions reached over the years by many observers and critics of society in general, and of education in particular.
