A Survey of English Courses for Immigrant Teachers. CILT Reports and Papers 5.
This survey examines current programs available for teaching English as a second language to prospective teachers who are already professionally qualified in their own countries but are not equipped to work in a classroom with English-speaking children. The areas concerned are: London, Bradford, Nottingham, Leicester, Coventry, and Wolverhampton; and the immigrant teachers are almost exclusively from India or Pakistan. The problems of professional and social re-orientation are explored in depth, and it is found that it is as vital as the actual language instruction for the teacher to undergo training in these areas.
