The Teacher As Choice Maker in Curriculum Development: A Case Study.

This paper presents a theoretical account of a two-year case study of eight deliberating teachers in curriculum development. A conception of the eclectic and problematic habits of mind required by intelligent teacher deliberation and choice is presented. The conceptual resolution of the teacher role is based on theoretical considerations of the overall purpose of development, the teacher's role in development, and empirical data obtained in the discourse of deliberating teachers. Results of this study will have educational possibilities for the improvement of curriculum development, for the realization of effective teacher-based curriculum planning, and for the in-service and preservice education of teachers.
