The American Newsreel 1911-1967.
Fielding, Raymond
This book is a chronological history of the "newsreel" from its beginnings in 1889 to the collapse of the last newsreel production company in 1967. The newsreel is traced from its birth in the United States and France, through its flowering in the "March of Time" and other series, to its demise due to competition with televised news. Economic qualities of this medium are stressed along with its propensity toward sensationalism. The failure of the newsreel to live up to its ethical and artistic potentialities is primarily explored. (CH)
