Main Ideas and Organization: Theme 6, Reading.
Gadway, Charles J.
As part of the National Assessment of Educational Progress in reading, this volume, "Theme 6: Main Ideas and Organization," directs attention to the fact that identifying the main idea of a passage or discovering its organization requires a higher level of comprehension than merely gleaning the important facts. Some of the exercises require the individual to identify the main idea in a passage either by suggesting an appropriate title or by identifying the point the author is attempting to make. Other exercises require the individual to identify the mode in which the author organizes the facts. The first chapter gives an explanation of the theme, and the remaining chapters in the volume discuss the results of the assessment of this theme.
