Sourcebook for Environmental Education.
Vivian, V. Eugene
This sourcebook is designed to assist school systems in developing a comprehensive curriculum for environmental education in grades K-12. A consideration of the need for environmental education is projected in Chapter 1 through a set of objectives together with an analysis indicating ethics and attitudes about environment to be the most influential aspect of environmental education. Several approaches to curriculum planning are offered. In Chapter 2, a series of unit plans, ranging from primary to secondary grade levels and requiring from three to eight weeks of class time, is presented. Content overview, objectives, generalizations, strategy, lesson outlines, materials to use, evaluation, and a bibliography are identified for each of these five plans. How to monitor environmental factors related to air, water, and solid waste pollution is the focus of Chapter 3. A third, interdisciplinary approach is featured in Chapter 4, with case studies of 16 communities. Sciences, both biological and physical, are intertwined with factors of geography, government, and politics. Many environmental problems are encountered by studying the human communities selected from a broad geographic range. A fifth chapter on evaluation is intended to delineate some novel means of evaluative procedures. (BL)
