Effects of an Experimental Course for Ninth Grade Science-Shy on Their Attitudes Toward Science and Scientists.
Starring, Ellsworth Arden
Reported is a study to determine whether attitudes of 139 ninth grade science students were changed after taking a special course, Man and His Environment. The Motz Attitude Instrument and the Lee and Kochendorfer Checklist for Science Classroom Activities were used as pre- and post-measurements. Two instruments were developed by the author to determine home attitudes toward science and the students' attitude toward the Man and His Environment course, respectively. Results indicated success in changing science-shy attitudes toward science and the scientist when teachers taught the course as designed. Teacher effectiveness was shown to be more influential than were student characteristics of sex, socio-economic status, I.Q., grade point average, home attitude toward science or attitude toward the course itself.
