Analysis and Design of Selected Science Exercises for the Sixth Grade.

The purposes of this study were to design process-oriented science exercises for the sixth grade and to evaluate their use in a correlated science-mathematics program. A sample of 175 sixth grade students from three selected schools was divided into two experimental groups (one using open-ended exercises, and one using structured exercises) and a control group, for a two-month experimental period. All students were pre- and post-tested on science and mathematics measures developed and validated by the researcher. It was found that the structured experimental group achieved significant gains on the science and mathematics measures. Although there was no significant difference between the three groups on the science measures, the structured experimental group surpassed the other groups on the mathematics measure. (MM)
