Objective Testing: A Guide for Science Teachers.

This concise guide to objective testing, prepared by the Centre for Studies in Science Education at the University of Leeds, is intended as a manual for those science teachers who wish to understand the scope and limitations of objective questions and to construct satisfactory test items for their own use. The first section discusses the nature of objective tests, defining the types of test items, what they measure, their advantages and disadvantages, and specific objectives in school science teaching and examining. The second section deals with writing objective test items, and specific examples are given to multiple choice, multiple completion, matching pairs, assertion-reason, true-false, and completion items. The following sections provide guidelines for revising test items, pretesting questions and combining them into an examination, and some basic statistical considerations in grading the examination. The manual concludes with a list of related publications suggested for further reading. (JR)
