Exceptional Children Conference Papers: Behavioral and Emotional Problems.

Four conference papers center on educational strategies for use with emotionally distrubed epileptic, the multuply handicapped retarded, hospitalized, and learning disabled children and adolescents. Special education at the National Children's Rehabilitation Center for emotionally disturbed epileptics is said to stress optimum learning through means such as teacher observation of child behaviors, the formulation of hypotheses regarding the observed behaviors, and a variety of teaching strategies. A paper on techniques in behavior modification used with multiply handicapped retarded children gives practical do's and don'ts such as don't expect overnight results and do carefully select the target behavior. Examined are the roles of the teacher in an ungraded open classroom at a children's hospital, and questioned is the relevance of present teacher education. A program of activized milieu therapy for learning disabled or emotionally disturbed adolescents is explained to include active involvement with younger children and projects, discipline by one's peers, counseling, and the application of the case study technique to self understanding.
