Communication Concepts and Perspectives.
Thayer, Lee, Ed.
Communication is not only cross-cultural but interdisciplinary--in fact, even supradisciplinary. The problem of effective communication lies in coordinating various cognitive structures and in overcoming the lack of knowledge about an individual's perceptual mechanization. In this volume, some twenty-five contributors and discussants from five nations and twenty disciplines--from psychiatry to sociology, from drama to information science--present a variety of opinions on the phenomena of human communication. They have attempted to break free of their disciplinary boundaries and, in writing about communication, have tried to communicate effectively with one another and with the reader. Following each paper is a lively discussion in which authorities in other disciplines probe and challenge the concepts and viewpoints offered by the contributor. (EE)
