New York State Education Dept., Albany. Curriculum Development Center.
This curriculum guide is designed to provide a basic framework of skills and activities useful to elementary and secondary teachers in the teaching of literature. The first section discusses activities to facilitate elementary school students' appreciation and understanding of literature. Activities are discussed for grades K-3 and grades 4-6 under the following headings: characterization; plot; setting; point of view; theme; diction; rhythm, sound, and stanza; and mood. A short annotated bibliography follows each of these sections. Bibliographies of children's poetry and general bibliographies for grades K-3 and grades 4-6, as well as a directory of publishers, are also provided in this section. The second section of the guide discusses activities for the junior high school and high school study of literature; activities for grades 7-9 and grades 10-12 are organized under the same headings as for the elementary school section of the guide.
