Approximate Evaluation Techniques for the Max Hierarchical Clustering Procedure.
Hubert, Lawrence
A technique for testing the hypothesis that a hierarchical sequence of partitions constructed by the max method could have been obtained solely on the basis of "noise" is discussed. The evaluation procedure imvolves comparing a rank-order goodness-of-fit measure to the tabled percentiles obtained from an approximate cumulative permutation distribution of the measure. One of the rank orderings of the object pairs is derived from the original similarity values between the objects to be partitioned; the second rank ordering of the object pairs is obtained from the partition hierarchy itself.
