The first of 6 experimental units, the instructional material presented in this document is directed to the 9th graders of the Oglala Sioux people. The stories presented are from the literary tradition of the Sioux people. The stories included are of 3 categories: (1) Ehanni (meaning a very long time ago) stories, which explain the creation and how things came to be; (2) Ohunkakan stories, telling of a time after the Sioux people had come to the surface of the world and before the times of their great-great-grandfathers; and (3) Ehanni Wicowogake stories, which tell the history of the Sioux people, based on historical fact. The 3 groups of stories tell of the coming of religious rites, lessons to be learned, social behavior, manners, and courtesy.
