Survey of Needs for Services to the Elderly. Final Report.
Dickstein, Howard W.
This survey of the occupational status, future needs, and educational interests of volunteers and professional personnel serving senior citizens who live in communities or institutional settings in Hartford, Connecticut, is based on the assumption that new careers will open up in fields related to gerontology to meet the needs of a rapidly expanding population of older adults in Connecticut. A questionnaire and a pretest were sent to personnel in social agencies, visiting and public health nursing associations, welfare departments, senior centers and clubs, convalescent homes, nursing homes, boarding homes, and hospitals serving Hartford, Connecticut. From the 254 respondents, the following service areas were identified: (1) medical care, (2) mental health, (3) financial assistance, (4) housing, and (5) social functioning. A second questionnaire was administered to 96 senior citizens both to determine their needs and to compare the results with organizational responses. Conclusions were: (1) Followup studies should focus on discrepancies noted between services reported by organizations and services seen as needing improvement by older adults, and (2) A geriatric program at the college level should be developed to meet in-service training needs and vocational interests related to the aging process.
