An Instructional System for the Low-Achiever in Mathematics: A Formative Study.
King, Donald Thomas
The purpose was to suggest improvements in the effectiveness of a unit on number theory designed to promote greater achievement and more positive attitudes toward mathematics for low achieving ninth grade students. Six classes were used. Three additive treatments were used with the materials: mastery learning; mastery learning and flow charting; and mastery learning, flow charting, and computer access. Results showed that all treatment groups displayed an over-all more positive attitude toward mathematics than the control group and showed significantly superior performance. Among the treatment groups, the mastery learning and flow charting group scored significantly higher than the other two. (Author/DT)
