A Comparison of Oral Language Patterns of Two Groups of Selected First Grade Negro Children as Measured by Loban's Analysis Techniques.

Data derived from the spontaneous speech samples of 64 first grade Negro children (32 from an inner city ghetto and 32 from a racially integrated middle income suburb of the same city) were examined to determine whether the difference in socioeconomic circumstances affected (1) the use of nine structural patterns of English and confusion in the use of these patterns and (2) the length in words of the patterns employed. Language samples used were recorded conversations of the subjects (four in a group) playing with Tinker Toys, with the recordings transcribed and coded according to the system of language analysis described by Loban in "The Language of Elementary School Children." Data for Hypothesis A (predicting a positive correlation between the speech of children in the ghetto and those of the suburbs) indicated no significant difference between the two groups. Furthermore, data for Hypothesis B (predicting middle class Negro children use longer speech patterns than lower class Negro children) indicated one socioeconomic group is not superior to the other. However, when the findings were compared with those of Loban's research, it became evident that, regardless of socioeconomic background, first grade children use a wider variety of speech patterns and show less confusion in their speech when it is initiated by the children themselves.
