You Are An Environment: Teaching/Learning Environmental Attitudes.
McInnis, Noel
Approaches to teaching and learning are described in this booklet, based on the premise that "every subject is about environment, and every subject can be taught environmentally." The author's definition, that "an environment is anything which is influencing, or being influenced by, something else," is used to emphasize that each individual is an environment, and that it is essential to consider the influence of each individual on all parts of his surroundings, that is, on all of his environments. Direct student involvement in a diversity of experiences is advocated, with minimal teacher direction. Both feelings and values are emphasized, and the artificiality of subject matter boundaries is stressed. The major sections of the booklet are "Thinking the World Together,""How are Environments Educational,""Teaching/Learning Environmentally," and "Teaching/Learning Environmental Attitudes: Some Class Activities." The last section is written for teachers of high school or college students, but the activities are intended to be adaptable for younger students as well. (AL)
