Heuristics: A Step Toward Getting There.
Anderson, G. Ernest, Jr.
This paper describes a series of heuristic approaches to helping schools analyze problems by the use of a teletype time-sharing computer terminal. The examples detailed include 1) a Delphi exercise for students; 2) a budgeting model which examines the results of various levels of funding and of changes of relative priorities; 3) a school redistricting problem which was formulated as a linear programming problem to provide the best possible solution within existing constraints; 4) an analysis of data to provide the optimum use of facilities; and 5) a technique for exploring the activities that should occur in a school being planned, adding the perceived roles of staff. While better models are being created and made available, these heuristic approaches offer a useful way to help school personnel gain insights into their problems of management and planning and to find out the effects of various proposed actions on a "while you wait" basis. Samples of the computer printout for each of the examples described are included in the document. (MBM)
