Unit: Soils, Inspection Pack, National Trial Print.
Australian Science Education Project, Toorak, Victoria.
This second trial edition is a revision of ED 049 929. The core portion of the unit, which is intended for students in grades seven or eight of Australian secondary schools, provides suggestions for activities designed to lead to an understanding of the structure, composition (biotic and abiotic), and origin of soils. Keys are provided for the major invertebrate groups and for soil types. Ecological cycles in the soil are investigated. Optional activities are provided for the following topics: Earthworms and Soil; How Can "Poor" Soils be Improved?; Soil Acidity; Weathering; Soil Erosion and Conservation; Australian Soils; Earthenware; and Civil Engineer for a Day (considers the properties of soil important for building of soil and rock dams). Core and optional activities require student investigation. The teachers' guide, an overprinted copy of the student's laboratory manual, contains suggestions for linking the unit with other Australian Science Education Project (ASEP) materials, lists of apparatus required and recommended references and audiovisual aids, as well as teaching notes for most activities. There is also a student record book that provides space for answering questions and for individual notes. (AL)
