Reading Comprehension across National Boundaries.
Thorndike, Robert L.
Some results from an international study of reading are discussed in this paper. Subjects were 10-year olds, 14-year olds, and secondary school seniors in 15 countries. A reading comprehension test was administered and the 10 and 14-year olds were given a speed reading test. Data analysis was at three levels: individual pupil scores, school characteristics associated with reading achievements of its students, and between-country comparisons. Data for all countries are presented, and compared with means and standard deviations of American subjects. (Charts and tables present detailed results of the study.) (WR)
