Identifying and Meeting the Health and Related Needs of the Aged: A Neighborhood Approach. Final Report.
Many needy elderly residents of New York City are unable to secure help of one kind or another, because of the lack of awareness of existing services, inability to complete the application process, or hesitancy in accepting assistance from others. Significant unmet needs exist in the areas of housing, health, finances, home services, transportation, loneliness and personal adjustment. During a 40-month period, experiences with 2520 needy elderly residents of four different neighborhoods showed that volunteers from the communities to be served could effectively be trained as 'middlemen' to seek out the hidden older person, determine his needs and help him reach services.
