Teaching School Mathematics. A UNESCO Source Book.
Servais, W., Ed.; Varga, T., Ed.
This book is designed to assist curriculum developers by presenting a survey of new approaches to teaching mathematics, both in practice and theory; the emphasis is on the secondary level. Following an extensive introduction, the first three chapters focus on the classroom. Suggested treatments of topics such as logic, groups, reflections (geometry), greatest common divisor and lowest common multiple, programing, statistics, matrices, and calculus are presented, as well as discussions of the use of teaching aids and axiomatics. Chapter 4 outlines five fields of psychological and educational research: intellectual ability, growth of pupils' thinking, concept formation and problem-solving, learning, and curricular studies. A selection of syllabi from eight nations and a proposed modern secondary school syllabus in mathematics are presented in chapters 5 and 6. The final chapter focuses on the training and re-training of mathematics teachers as a vehicle to reform. (JM)
