Handbook to the Conservation Section of the International Biological Programme.
Nicholson, E. M.
Dealing with the organization and activities of one section of the International Biological Programme (IBP), the Conservation Section (CT - Conservation of Terrestrial Communities), this handbook provides an overview of one scientific effort within the worldwide conservation movement. Requirements for a World Conservation Program are described to show how the aims and principles of the Conservation Section have been coordinated for this effort. Its basic task is set forth as the collection and analysis of information about natural areas of scientific importance throughout the world. More specifically, it is concerned with the selection and protection of sites and species within a land environment. Requirements for selection and survey of ecological areas, national contributions and international projects conducted by or in cooperation with the IBP/CT, and the organization of staff, liaison, and training are enumerated. Concluding remarks outline an envisioned end-product of IBP/CT work, a World Conservation Review or extended treatment of the problems in conservation and applied econoly studied in the IBP. References, personnel, statements and resolutions are included in the appendices. (BL)
