Suggestions for methods of teaching the science material included in grades three and four of the elementary school curriculum of the Education Department of Victoria are illustrated by descriptions of successful teaching episodes, particularly when science activities have served as an introduction to written expression, applied number, and social studies "lessons." The emphasis throughout is on individual student manipulation and experimentation in a flexible, inter-related program. In each of the sections, "Matter,""Energy," and "Life," methods of assisting the development of observation, categorization, measurement, organization, inference, testing ideas, and language skills are suggested.
