Implementation of a Migrant Education Program in the Richgrove School District.
Blancett, Bob L.
The purpose of the study was to describe the development, implementation, and observed results of the migrant education program in the Richgrove School District in California during the 1970-71 school year. The program was designed to enrich reading and writing skill development, to teach English as a second language, to improve the self-image of the migrant child, and to offer nutritional and health services. The 5 major areas of investigation were the introduction to the problem; the review of related literature; the description of the migrant education program; the observed results of the migrant program; and the summary, conclusions, and recommendations for further study. Findings indicated that all migrant children tested showed increased achievement in reading, that children in the English as a Second Language classes learned to speak English more quickly than did other migrant students, that the gain in mathematics was lower than the gain in reading, that the objectives of the health and nutritional programs were met, and that opportunities were offered to help improve the self-image of the migrant student. A glossary, a 40-item bibliography, and various appendices are included. (PS)
