Population: A Primer; A Self-Teaching BASIC Workbook.
Digital Equipment Corp., Maynard, MA.
The opening chapter of this workbook introduces the user to BASIC, a simple computer programming language, by explaining terminal use and commands such as "print" and "scratch". The second chapter uses population as an example to consider ways to input and handle large numbers and offers a further explanation of the "print" command. A problem dealing with population growth is presented in the third chapter, and a program to compute and print the answer to the problem is outlined and presented, step by step. How to construct tables with the computer, and additions to the program devised in the preceding chapter are presented in the fourth chapter. "If" and "go to" statements and how they would fit into the program on population growth are detailed in the next chapter; and the sixth chapter covers "for-next" loops. Chapter seven explains how to use subscripted variables, subroutines, and two new statements--"gosub" and "return". Problems involving variables with two subscripts and ways to change the data base are worked through, and information sources for becoming fluent in BASIC are offered in the last chapter. (SH)
