Malamalama Community College--A Possible Dream: A Prospectus for a New Community College on the Island of Oahu.
Potter, Robert E.
This proposal for a new, innovative community college of the future was prepared in conjunction with the Task Force on Education for the Governor's Conference on Hawaii in the Year 2000. Topics covered are the student body, curriculum and learning strategies, programs, student advising, student activities, faculty, college governance, community involvement, relationship with private colleges, and physical site and campus architecture. Four distinctive features, which would be hallmarks to Malamalama Community College, are: (1) the emphasis is on individualization of learning opportunities, including the use of self-instruction and programmed materials, work experience programs in the community, and small group interaction; (2) all programs, courses, and units would spell out objectives in behavioral terms; (3) there would be an attempt to take the college to the community, instead of bringing the community to the college; and (4) the college would be accountable for all programs, being able to produce records showing how resources have been utilized and responsibilities met. Another unique feature is the proposed "dispersed campus." Only minimum facilities would be centrally located, with learning opportunities provided through many satellites such as students' homes, packaged materials, and television and telephone contact.
