Inupiat Eskimo Dictionary.
Webster, Donald H.; Zibell, Wilfried
Vocabulary compiled over a 10-year period of Eskimos living in the villages of North and Northwest Alaska is classified by subject in this dictionary. Main categories include terms relating to people; the heavens, earth, and atmosphere; place, time, and descriptives; and other words. Words derived from the Kobuk River dialect are indicated with a (K), and words belonging to the North Alaska dialect are signified by the notation (N). A section on Eskimo post-bases is included. Alaskan post-bases are added to bases to modify meaning. Their function is similar to that of English adverbs, adjectives, auxiliary verbs, and tenses. An English index relating to the first two sections concludes the text. A guide to Eskimo writing is included. (RL)
