The Teaching of Reading. Methods and Results: An Overview.
Spache, George D.
This book reviews research on the teaching of elementary reading and summarizes the research in such a way as to make it useful to the elementary school teacher. A number of methods and procedures of instruction are considered. The first chapter discusses when to begin reading and general topics related to teaching young children, and the second chapter describes readiness factors and programs. Teaching reading with a basal system is the subject of the third chapter, and innovative approaches including initial teaching alphabet, language experience, linguistic, and individualized programs are treated in chapter four. The fifth chapter discusses teaching reading to the disadvantaged, and the sixth chapter is concerned with teaching reading at the intermediate and upper elementary levels. (MS)
