Graduate Programs in Physics, Astronomy, and Related Fields.
Koch, H. William
This publication was designed to provide comparative information on programs for those students considering graduate work in physics and related fields. Entries include program data from institutions of higher learning in the United States and Puerto Rico, for a total of 210 doctoral programs and 336 master's degree programs in physics and astronomy. For those students interested in related fields, an additional 171 doctoral and master's programs are described for fields other than physics and astronomy. Each complete Ph.D. entry includes information and comments on the following items: the graduate faculty, the active research specialties and associate staff and facilities, the undergraduate preparation expected of beginning graduate students, requirements for the Ph.D., available assistantships and fellowships, the number of graduate students and degrees granted, availability of summer and extension courses, and the campus environment. For master's degree programs the information called for was restricted to the availability of research and independent study opportunities, assistantships, degree requirements, and the size and output of the master's degree program. In addition to an index of graduate programs by institution arranged geographically, there are two summary tables: research specialties of doctoral programs in physics and astronomy, and Ph.D. programs in related fields.
