Future Directions of Doctoral Education for Nurses. Report of a Conference.

This is a report of a conference called for the purpose of exploring evolving trends in nursing education and the implications of these trends for support of research training for nurses. The conference discussed the following issues: (1) If the doctoral study is in nursing, how can the research emphasis be retained? (2) Is there a nursing science? Is it sufficently developed to grant a Ph.D. degree in nursing? (3) How can a balance between clinical nursing and clinical research be achieved within a Doctor of Nursing Science degree? The 4 background papers presented at the conference are included in Part II of the report (HS)
