Study of NDEA Title IV Fellowship Program. Phase I.
Sharp, Laure M.; And Others
This report summarizes the findings of the first phase of a study designed to provide an evaluation of the NDEA Title IV Graduate Fellowship Program in regard to its stated objective of increasing the number of college and university teachers by assisting doctoral students preparing for academic careers. It is based entirely upon secondary analysis of available data and consists primarily of statistical tables with only a brief summary of the major findings. These data suggest that while the award of the fellowship per se did not develop a strong sense of commitment to completion of the doctorate among all awardees, those who received the fellowship for 3 years and obtained their degree had a strong teaching commitment, even in fields where alternative sources of employment were plentiful.
