This report consists of two papers devoted to the learning of English in the comprehensive high schools of Hessia, West Germany. The first paper discusses a study which suggests replacement of traditional methods by an audiolingual approach. A catalog of learning goals supplants outdated curriculums, thereby ensuring a stepwise progression of realistic aims, forcing improvement of instructional materials, and stressing the primacy of speech and communication. Instruction, administered in a team-teaching program, is divided into units, each having a nuclear phase (all students learning the same material) and a differentiated phase (students with problems taking intensive work). In accordance with this system, projections are made for a five-year program. References are included. The second paper discusses curriculum planning. It presents arguments claiming that valid curriculum changes must be built on national and international efforts, apply research results from all related fields (including linguistics and psychology), actively involve the teachers, and be accompanied by materials specifically designed for the techniques evolved.
