The Use of Informative Themes in the Reading Anthologies for the Teaching of Composition in Grades Four through Twelve.
Fechek, Theresa Anne
This study analyzes the quantities of specific types of informative materials in reading anthologies from Grades 4 through 12, and suggests a means for coordinating materials needed for coordinating materials needed for communicating written information accurately. Studies of curriculum materials in reading and content analysis of previous studies of textbooks are reported. A content analysis of the informative contents in five major series and four supplementary sets of basal readers, companion series, and literature anthologies totaling 63 books indicates the number of informative articles presented in each textbook, the total number of pages containing these articles, and the percentages of pages of articles. The approximate number of words is tabulated for each article and the average length of the articles in each book is determined. The reading books examined are those published by major companies from 1960 to the present. The results of the information collected at the intermediate, junior, and senior high levels are reported. An explanation of procedures for the development of a set-form of writing called the informative theme is presented. One of the findings of the study is that there is a need for definite guidelines in the use of informative themes in reading textbooks. (Author/DB)
