New Thinking in School Biology.

Five papers presenting the case for reform of biology teaching, five outlining new approaches to biology curricula (including the role of mathematics), and summaries of the discussions that followed each group of papers when presented at the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, introduce the report of the conference proceedings. A summary of the educational systems, with special reference to the teaching of secondary school biology in Austria, Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Iceland, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, accounts of trends toward reform of biological education in these countries (except Austria) and Ireland, the United States, Brazil, and Colombia. Summary papers on the character of the needed reforms and the problems of implementation, committee reports on the aims of biological education, an educational program in biology, the training of biology teachers, the role of films and other aids, the role of laboratory and field work, technical facilities, and the retraining of teachers, precede a panel discussion (from an administrative viewpoint) of the problems of implementing the recommended reforms. Appendices include a list of participants and a list of books displayed at the meeting. (AL)
