Czech: Introduction to Slovak for Students of Czech.
Defense Language Inst., Washington, DC.
This textbook, prepared by the Defense Language Institute, is designed to acquaint students of Czech with Slovak, a language closely related to Czech. The phonology and morphology of the two languages are briefly compared. Some of the most frequent lexical items differing from Czech are presented. Students are expected to acquire only a passive knowledge of Slovak by familiarizing themselves with the basic differences between the two languages. Major sections include: (1) pronunciation and spelling, (2) grammar, (3) phrases, (4) readings, and (5) dialogues. Illustrations of cultural aspects are included, and a vocabulary list is provided.
