Nippon Hoso Kyokai (NHK--Japan Broadcasting Company) is the only public service broadcasting organization in Japan. It is financed entirely with receivers' fees paid by television and radio set owners. NHK conducts a variety of educational broadcast activities. Two services provided by NHK are the Gauken senior high school correspondence program and the college correspondence program. NHK also presents special programs for mentally and physically handicapped children and a wide variety of social education programs. The social education programs include instruction in such subjects as foreign languages, vocational training, business management, agriculture, forestry, fisheries, science, and Japanese culture. This report provides a brief description of each of these NHK programs. (JY)
