Reducing Social Tension and Conflict through the Group Conversation Method.
DuBois, Rachel Davis; Li, Mew-Soong
This book is divided into three parts. Part I discusses the art of Group Conversation per se. It is the art of face-to-face sharing of meaningful experiences--such as memories of Christmas as a child--in a spontaneous atmosphere that quickly breaks down hostilities and produces rapport. Part II discusses the techniques of this art. Basically, Group Conversation requires a leader who cares so much about people and their feelings that he tries to stimulate them into self-expression. The selection of a topic by the leader in conjunction with two or three other persons prior to the group get-together is an important preliminary step in this art. Part III focuses on the applications of Group Conversation, e.g., in a Southern City, in an Upstate New York City, and in the Nation's Capital. An annotated bibliography of related reading materials is included. (CK)
